I was going to buy a Nintendo DS Lite from
https://www.bestpricedbrands.co.uk as they were the cheapest I could find
but they look a bit dodgy to me! No address or phone number, and it you go
through the checkout it doesn't look secured even though they say it is? Any
experts can confirm this? Meanwhile, any good prices on a DS Lite
appreciated.

You don't need to be an expert to know that those are all danger
signs. I dug around the website myself - almost all companies have
some address listed under 'terms and conditions' or 'returns' but not
this one, not even a PO address. Funny how they couldn't be bothered
to opt out of whois though:

Domain name:

Registrant's address:
56 E Holly Street, Suite 220W

US

Xmas 2005 (?) I dealt with a company rather like this one (ie
UK-sounding site that turned out to be based in the US, complete with
non-functional 'freephone' numbers). They were selling PSPs
apparently cheaper than anyone else, except as soon as I had clicked
on 'confirm purchase' the price magically jumped by 10%.

They did not reply to any emails. Got the excess back from the cc
company eventually - and much to my surprise, a month later, I got the
PSP as well, when I thought I'd been taken to the cleaners.

You never know, this crowd might be fine, but I wouldn't take the
risk, personally... it wasn't worth the grief.

You're right, it wouldn't have been! Another cheap one looking like in the
UK but in fact, Hong Kong (or thereabouts) http://www.gamechimp.co.uk/ again
no address or phone contact details. As for bestpricedbrands.co.uk, at
little more Googleing reveals nobody has reported not getting their orders
(amongst the many forums about them) but what they do get is US Japanese
versions etc ... therefore problems reported like cameras with Japanese
menus, consoles with wrong region codes and I presume wrong voltage!

I actually didn't do too badly out of that purchase in the end. It
was a white PSP before they were available over here, and even before
the refund the price I paid was not that bad. When it arrived I found
the power unit did not have the mains lead hard-wired to the AC
adaptor like the UK models did, which gave me more flexibility... I
suppose it depends what you're buying (PSPs aren't region-coded).

But like I said, I wouldn't take the risk again. I seem to recall
other customers of the same firm weren't so lucky.

Y'know if I were buying a DS lite I'd get a 2nd hand one from
GameStation, trading in some old played-out games or something for
extra discount. Once I'd dropped and sat on it a few times no-one
would ever know it was not new when I bought it...
