I'm looking for a DVD Recorder.

I know Sainsburys had one at £99 but theyre all gone now. And Richer sounds
have one for ~ £120.

I have heard you can buy referbs (which doesnt bother me as this is only for
my parents).

So what is the cheapest one around? Anyone got a nice cheap one that they
find works well?

Cheers

So the people who bought you to life, nurtured you, comforted you, wiped
your bum and nose, helped you, encouraged you and generally looked after
you are only worth a refurb?

Ungrateful b*stard :-)

The Makro DVDR is the first under £100 which I have seen with VidePlus. A
very useful feature for a DVDR IMO.

If you read my OP you would know they have all sold out. Well my local
branches have - and they say they are not getting any more in.

Can you still get those stand alone VideoPlus remotes that came out when
VideoPlus first came out?

Do you mean that you can control the DVDR from the Freeview box using the
Freeview EPG? If so how does that work?

My Philips DVDR75 has a sat record mode where it will begin recording
whenever the scart on EXT2 recieves a switch on signal.

Most decent satellite and freeview boxes send this when switching from
standby mode to show a reserved program.

It works with my Humax F2-Fox-T I'll try with the cheapo Sagem idt 62 in
the next room. If that works I'll probably get another one and have that in
standby/event mode all the time.

Do you have the same problem as me? My Digibox sends the scart signal
when switching on the box, aswell as timed programs.

Yep. It's not strictly a problem - just a feature!

Conversely if the Freeview box is already on when a timed program starts -
no signal is sent. The signal is actually tied to the switching on and off
of the FV box. Timed events happen to switch the box on and off **if the
box is already on standby**.

Its a bit of a hack, and means that unless you are dilligent in switching
off the box when not using it - you will miss stuff!

Untill the Twin-tuner/PVR market matures, I'm tempted to get a cheap 2nd FV
box dedicated to my DVDR - then later, it may make a nice crimbo present
for anyone I know that hasnt got one yet :)

I find it waay too fiddly switching the SCART recording option on and
off on the recorder. Plus, I'm prone to making mistakes with such
things. Like, I'll get home.. forget it's in that mode.. switch on TV
and BZZT... it starts recording...

It would be better if the Freeview box had the option to just send the
trigger on timed events. I don't *need* it when switching the box on
as I am perfectly able to select the AV channel from my remote :-)

Yup. But the DVDR is just using the same trigger that TV's look for when
scart connected devices are switched on.
If the FV box firmware and an option to toggle the sending of this signal
between on/off (for TV connection) and timed programs (for VCR) that would
be cool - but may cause other problems I havent thought of yet :)

Yup. Just make sure its a different make to your existing one so you can
use the remote !! Will probably look a bit messy but I'd still rather wait
for the next generation of PVRs - especially as I want to get my moneys
worth out of my DVDR now!

You can set Philips DVDR (prolly others) to record from a trigger
signal sent down the SCART cable with the start and end of a timer
program, which most freeview boxes will do. My OnDigital box is a bit
stoopid and sends the triggers when the unit is switched on and off
also.. so I just set my programs manually.

A Sony will do it via iLink, that is if you have a Sony freeview box. Well
so's it says about the HX900 recorder.

Thanks Steve.

Were not a member with Macro (or Costco for that matter - but with Costco I
think you can register if you are govt. employed - Healthcare etc and my mum
is a doctor and the site used to say you can apply for membership for this -
is this the same for Macro?).

Cheers

Lol. I meant that they are buying it, and so don't want to spend too much on
something thats all singing, all dancing and makes them a coffee.
